Use of the Autopilot

Where aircraft are fitted with a flight director and/or autopilot and the equipment is intended to be used during the flight, the applicant will be expected to carry out the necessary pre-flight checks to establish serviceability.

— CAA Standards Document One

I’ve changed the format of the Autopilot Test and Normal Use pages to make them more clearly readable on all formats of web browsers. Remember, it is a CAA requirement that you test all of the autopilot modes that you will use during the test. Allowed modes are Roll, Heading, Altitude and Vertical Speed. Although use of Control Wheel Steering (CWS) is not taught or recommended on the course, it is just another way of rolling to a bank angle at a required vertical speed, so arguably it should be tested before flight.
